Swire Resources Honored with Excellent Waste Management Award
Swire Resources is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the Excellent Green Practices Award – Waste Management by Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance for its company-wide efforts in effective waste management and stewardship in sustainability. With finite resources available in this planet which we call home, it is crucial that we prioritize how to utilize and recover resources efficiently in our daily operation.
Various initiatives reflecting the waste management hierarchy have been implemented throughout Swire Resources’ operation to minimise waste generation and lower landfill ratio:
- Transitioned to paperless delivery to eliminate the annual usage of 400,000 pieces of paper usage every year.
- Switched to packaging that is less material-intensive or made with recycled content to reduce virgin plastic consumption.
- Adopted reusable alternatives where possible to replace single-use logistics items such as zip ties, pallet wrap and containers. Other materials like carton box, paper stuffing is also reused internally before recycling/disposal.
- Partner with VCycle, a social enterprise that drives vulnerable elderly reemployment, to help process recyclable retail operational waste, in addition to setting up recycling collection points at our warehouse and office.
- Created positive social impact with inevitable off season write-off goods through internal clothing swap event to promote fashion circularity where remaining surplus are donated to local charitable organisations to support the vulnerable communities in Hong Kong.
- Raise staff consciousness on waste impact by promoting reusable culture e.g. giving out travel-friendly reusable utensil kit to staff on Earth Day, offering a container borrowing service at office and prioritising reusable items at company events.
Swire Resources will continue to dedicate its collaborative efforts, both internally and externally, to divert as much waste from the landfill as possible and set a good example of responsible waste management in the retail industry.
